Comments:

My career has been in radio for most of my life...starting in the early '70s at WRTA, where I did just about everything, including the play-by-play of over 800 high school basketball games, involving the Altoona Lady Lions, the Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders, the Hollidaysburg Lady Tigers, the Williamsburg Lady Blue Pirates and the Bellwood Antis Lady Blue Devils. I was fortunate to have done the play-by-play for State Championship wins for four Altoona teams as well as one each for Bishiop Guilfoyle and Williamsburg. In my final season with Altoona Coach Art Taneyhill and the Lady Lions, I did the play-by-play of the Lady Lions win over Northampton in the 1996 State Championship Game in Hershey. This was particularly memorable...since my daughter Kelley was a member of that team. When coach placed the gold medal around her neck, my voice cracked as I spoke her name on the air, as tears filled my eyes.

An added benefit, during my twenty-three years at WRTA, was my numerous trips to Three Rivers Stadium. Over the years, I've interviewed over 200 major leaguers including Roberto Clemente, my favorite growing up. I've also met and/or interviewed Hall of Famers including Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Tom Seaver, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Bill Mazeroski, Ernie Banks, Jim Palmer, Harmon Killebrew, Willie McCovey, Willie Stargell, Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, Eddie Murray, Gaylord Perry, Mike Schmidt, Billy Williams, Red Schoendeinst, Warren Spahn, George Brett, Joe Morgan, Ozzie Smith, Carlton Fisk, Dave Winfield, Earl Weaver. Leo Duroucher, Don Drysdale and Commissioner Bowie Kuhn I was also fortunate enough to have met other sports celebrities including Muhammed Ali, Michael Jordan, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Joe Paterno, Chris Evert, Martina Navratolova, Nadia Comaneci, Bart Connor, Bob Prince, Bob Costas Dick Schapp. Tracy Austin, Lou Pinella, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Summer Sanders, Chuck Daly and current Chicago Cubs manager, Joe Maddon.

A move to Florida in 1997 landed me in radio once again where I'm presently an Advertising Sales Specialist at Hits 106, where I've been since 1999. I plan to retire during the summer of 2020. Sheila, my wife of forty-five years, has retired from her position as an executive assistant at a manufacturing company. She and I are enjoying our life in The Sunshine State.

My son Chris graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle and got his Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Illinois. He works for a marketing firm in Washington, DC. He and his wife Pam live in the Capitol District.

My daughter Kelley graduated from the University of Florida with a double major in Art Education and Art History. She moved back to Florida in 2015 after spending a decade as a middle school teacher in Nashville, TN. She was a 3-D Art Teacher at Seminole High School for four years before marrying David Jacobson in August 2020.

School Story:

Since I attended Logan Junior High School, I entered high school with the opportunity to make alot of new friends who attended Keith and Roosevelt. While still living in Altoona, it was not uncommon to 'bump into' a former classmate, both in business and socially. Based on where my career led me, it's not surprising that some of my best memories involved dramatics, including roles in the two school productions in my sophomore year, under the direction of Eleanor Maurer. I also enjoyed Mr. Nixon's Speech Class and Stella Marie's Spanish Class.

Since I just attended our 50th High School Reunion, I thought this would be a good time to post this. The majority of these 'autographs' came from the Logan Area Junior High School Class of '66! I got this signed on the final day of our ninth grade year.

"Cem" Maier has left an In Memory comment for Paul Hargreaves, III.
Apr 17, 2017 at 8:33 AM

I was saddened when I read that Paul Hargreaves, a good friend of mine from my Logan Area Junior High School days, passed away recently at his home in Tennessee. Paul was one of the 'cool kids', and let me into 'his' circle. Back in those junior high days, we'd talk to one another on the phone in the evening. I'd sometimes get my parents to take me to his house just off Goods Lane. We'd walk over to the mall or go bowling. He was a heck of a bowler, and an athlete......and a friend. We were both graduates of the Class of 1969 at Altoona Area High School. I've only seen him once since we graduated 48 years ago...at the Altoona Full Gospel Church, when he visited with his Aunt Betty Shaneyfelt. I thought about calling him about a year ago after I tracked him down on the internet. I never did...and I regret it now. If you've thought about calling a family member or an old friend...don't just think about it...do it! Rest in peace. my friend!

I got a surprise at Three Rivers Stadium...turning around and there was Muhammad Ali. While I didn't get to interview him, I did get this picture as well as an autograph.

A Perfect Ten! No, not Bo Derek, but Nadia Comaneci, the Romanian gymnast, the first ever gymnast to score a perfect ten...doing so in the 1976 Olympics. This was taken at the National Women's Sports Foundation Banquet in NYC in 1990, when I received the National Award for coverage of women's sports.
