Richard Allen ‘Rick’ Weigand

Richard Allen “Rick” Weigand, 67, Altoona, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019, at UPMC Altoona, surrounded by his loving family after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, the former Vicky Horton, on Jan. 10, 2019. 

Rick joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served his country during the Vietnam War. He was always involved in coaching sports while his children, Amy Jo (Steve) Webster and Richard P. (Kira Hoffmann), were growing up. 

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his family and friends and he was an avid sports fan. He adored his five grandchildren: Patryck, Ryen, Kody, Calli and Cydney. When “Pappy” was babysitting, you could be sure the day would be filled with fun, long walks outside, gardening and trips to the store for the best snacks (and of course, there was no limit on snacks). He was loved dearly and will be missed by his children, grandchildren, siblings, cousins, nephews, nieces, in-laws and friends. 

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2019, at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Arrangements are by Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville.

He often voiced that he felt a close kinship when he was in the company of fellow veterans. Also, during the long fight for his life that started with kidney disease, he would often reflect on his time at dialysis and state that he felt bad for the others around him; that there were so many people worse off than he was.
