John Imler

John E. Imler

April 17, 1951 – Nov. 27, 2023

John E. Imler, 72, of Altoona, peacefully passed away Monday surrounded by family after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. John was the son of Donald and Mary Imler of Altoona.

A 1969 graduate of Altoona Area High School, John faithfully volunteered to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps right out of high school, when many were being drafted. John was medically retired from the VA Hospital in Altoona.

John loved music, sports (Penn State football, Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR), history, Star Wars and animals (especially bulldogs). The later part of John’s life brought significant medical challenges which prevented him from doing many of the things he loved, but that didn’t stop him from what he loved best, and that was spending time with his family. John was a true family man that loved his wife and family until his very last breath.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Shirley Ann Imler (Welshans) of Altoona; son, John Evan Imler III and his wife, Amy, of Altoona; son, Brian S. Imler and his wife, Peggy, of Fredericksburg, Va.; and daughter, Jennifer Oliver (Imler) and her husband, Austin, of Ankeny, Iowa. Additionally, he had nine grandchildren: Kristen, Brandon, John, Austin, Hannah, Holly, Zoe, Emilee and Maverick; and six great-grandchildren: Thaddeus, Charlotte, Carter, Bennett, Carson and Mia. John is also survived by his sister, Karen Wilson (Imler) and her husband, Randy; brother, Donald (Buddy) Imler and wife, Charlene; brother, William “Bill” Imler and wife, April; and brother, James “Jim” Imler and wife, Paula. John was also loved by countless nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

Friends and family will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., 108 Alto-Reste Park, Altoona. A Celebration of John’s Life will immediately follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made in memory of John to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.thegoodfuneralhomeinc.com.
