Kermit N. Alwine, 60, died Wednesday morning at his residence in Greenwood.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Joseph N. and Vivian V. (Shaffer) Alwine.
Surviving are a daughter, Alicia A. Alwine of Altoona, and her son, Ashton M. Alwine; a son, Kermit J. Alwine of Altoona; a sister, Diane Speece and husband, Jack, of Altoona; his significant other, Debbie Himes, with whom he resided; a niece, Karen Hamel; a nephew, Ryan Speece; his beloved cat, Buckles; and many friends.
Kermit was a 1969 graduate of Altoona Area High School and served in the Armed Forces. He retired as a machinist for Conrail and had worked for McCloskey Builders and also for many years at Mrs. Grove's Pastries when it was the family business.
He was a life member of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company and was a founding member of the Blair Division Forest Fire Warden and Crew Member Association, serving as president. He also went out West many times, fighting fires as part of a specialized crew for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and was a social member of many volunteer fire organizations. He was a life member of the Blair County Game, Fish and Forestry Association.
Kermit loved attending antique car shows and was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata (www.maukandyates.com), and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at Greenwood United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, Jack Speece and the Rev. Joe Fleck officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
